What happens if you don't use lye in soap?

When making cold process soap, oils and lye water are combined to go through the saponification process.  We are often asked if soap can be made without lye because of concerns that lye remains in the finished soap.  Thankfully, when a soap recipe is properly formulated, no lye remains in your soap bars!  But would we be able to make soap without lye at all?
